A Handcrafted Tradition

Since 1967, our dedicated team of craftsmen in Osaka, Japan, have refined shell manufacture to the level of art. By constantly questioning and improving techniques, as well as building on the Japanese tradition of meticulous woodworking skills, we have created a range of drums that is second to none.

We produce perfectly round shells using our pioneering air Seal System, where diagonally cut plies are assembled in a process known as 'Kachikomi'. and we have discovered just how much adhesive to use to maximise the natural resonance of the wood. The lacquering stage benefits from knowledge acquired by our piano division. Each shell is sprayed eight times by hand, and sanded a total of 11 times. This gradually builds a coating that simultaneously assists resonance and sustain while giving a beautiful, protective, mirror finish. But our greatest source of pride is no secret technique. It's you, the drummer.

By listening to drummers we have delivered countless innovations, including the original 'hanging tom', through the ball joint tom holder, to our latest development, the Nouveau Lug. It's just one example of the dedication which allows us to claim with confidence that Yamaha make the finest drums in the world.
